Bowling's Cousin Uses Candle Pin Bowling Balls
![]() |
The game called candle pin bowling uses candle pin bowling balls that are much smaller than normal bowling balls. Candle pin bowling is popular in the New England states of the northeastern United States. It is also played in some Canadian provinces such as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. When you first observe candle pin bowling balls and pins, you will immediately see how different they are from regular ten pin bowling. Some of the differences include the candle pin bowling balls, the candle pins, and the difficulty of the game.
Candle pin bowling balls are slightly larger than a softball. They are 4.5 inches in diameter and have no finger holes. The regulation weight for candle pin bowling balls is 2 pounds 7 ounces. The object of candle pin bowling is the same as regular bowling -- to roll the ball down the lane and knock down as many pins as possible. However, candle pin bowling balls are held in the palm of the hand rather than by finger holes. Each player rolls three balls per frame, as opposed to two in regular bowling. Games are sometimes referred to as strings, with each turn called a box instead of a frame.
The object of the game is to roll the candle pin bowling balls and knock down as many candle pins as possible. That is similar to regular bowling. The candle pins themselves are much different than ten pins, however. The candle pins are 15-3/4 inches tall and have a slight and equal taper from the middle to each end. Each candle pin therefore has no discernible top or bottom. Ten candle pins are set up in the same pattern as they are in regular bowling. Players roll candle pin bowling balls at the pins in an effort to knock them down. The pins are placed on 12-inch centers as in regular bowling, but their more slender form makes them harder to knock down.
It is much more difficult to knock down pins with candle pin bowling balls for several reasons. First, the ball is much smaller and lighter than a traditional bowling ball. The players throwing candle pin bowling balls cannot give the balls as much momentum as a 16-pound bowling ball. The candle pins themselves are thinner but heavier than ten pins, making multiple knock downs even less likely. It is possible to throw a strike with candle pin bowling balls, which knocks down all ten candle pins. However, a perfect game in candle pin bowling has yet to be recorded.
Much more skill is required to bowl with candle pin bowling balls. The ball is smaller and lighter, with no finger holes to guide it. The pins are thin and heavy, meaning that they are harder to hit, and often spin in place rather than falling. Hitting multiple pins is more difficult due to smaller sizes of both the pins and the candle pin bowling balls. If you are tired of bowling and looking for a challenge, try candle pin bowling.
